Maia Viken (b. 1998) is a composer from Skien, a small city located in the south-east of Norway. She is currently based in Oslo, Norway. In 2024 she graduated with a Master’s degree from the Norwegian Academy of Music, where she also did her Bachelor’s degree.
Viken composes both electronic and instrumental music within different formats, ranging from sound installations and music for theatre and dance, to music for both ensembles and soloists. Her music draws inspiration from movement in nature, old factories and architecture, as well as handicraft and old technologies. The sounding result is often characterised by a mixture of slow, evolving timbres and small, twirling or mechanic movements.
In recent years Viken’s works have been performed at Ultima, UNM and Klang, as well as exhibited in Spriten Kunsthall. She received Skien kommune’s working grant in 2021 and was chosen for Korpsnett’s young composer program the following year. She has been a member of Norsk Komponistforening since 2022.
